Soft play or a bounce house? For a first birthday, choose soft play for the birthday child and add a bounce house only if older children are coming. A one-year-old is crawling or taking first steps, and a soft play set is built for exactly that stage: low padded climbers, foam blocks, a small slide and a ball pit inside a fence. A bounce house is for children who already walk and jump steadily, and it works best with jumpers of a similar size, which is why it belongs to the cousins and older siblings.

Planning both? A Mini soft play set is 9 ft x 12 ft and a Mini bounce house is 9 ft x 9 ft and 7.5 ft tall. With 1 ft clear on every side, plan for about 11 ft x 14 ft for the set and 11 ft x 11 ft for the bounce house, plus an 8 ft ceiling indoors. Soft play needs no power. A bounce house needs an outlet nearby and cannot run in rain or strong wind, so for an outdoor party in spring or fall, soft play is the safer single choice.
